You Knew (Poem) by Leanne Dyck

She said, "I really enjoyed reading your poem."

"Thank you, but I don't write poetry." I told everyone, including myself.

But lately...

You Knew

I knew I wasn't.
You told me I was.

I thought I wasn't.
You insisted I was.

I explained that I wasn't.
You showed me I was.

And now I see
That I might be...

A poet.

"Playmates" (memoir)
a tribute to three cousins.

"Pregnant" (memoir)
Inspired by imagining how my dad reacted to my mom suspecting she may be pregnant with their fourth child—me.

"Like Him" (memoir)
As a dyslexic student in the 1960s, school definitely had its challenges. Some were academic. Others were interpersonal.

"CGIT"
Groups have shaped many aspects of my life. I had a fourteen-year career as an Early Childhood Educator caring for groups of children. In my twenties, I became a Katimavik participant and volunteered in three eastern Canadian provinces. And when I was twelve, I joined CGIT. What's CGIT? Well...

Written with much thanks to a friend who helped me believe in "happy ever afters."

On the day of the celebration, we all woke up way too early to catch the first ferry. The ferry docked, and we drove from the terminal to Port Coquitlam. The celebration was a fitting tribute full of love and life. On the way back to the ferry—the last one of the day—we stopped at Tsawwassen Mills. Tswawwassen Mills is a huge—especially to this rural islander—shopping mall in Tsawwassen. There are tons of things to see and buy.

The fun ended abruptly when Tim discovered he had lost his wallet and cellphone.

Worry seized us. Would they let him on the airplane without ID? How would he get back to Saskatchewan? Obligations waited for him at home.

We all thought his possessions had been stolen. We all thought he would never see them again. Except... Maybe...

"Why don't we try calling Tim's cellphone?" Carol suggested.

My husband phoned the number and

A man answered, "I have the phone and the wallet, and I'd like to return them."

That phone call led to Tim retrieving his property. Proving once again that there are good people in the world.
